What is the deal with sunscreen?! (Curated Post)
Updated: May 2, 2022
In the beauty industry, protecting your skin from sun damage and free radicals has become a hot topic. According to some, sunscreen is not a necessary skincare product, and some can't leave the house without it. In this blog post, we're going to delve into important facts regarding sunscreen and the benefits of daily use.
"Aging and wrinkles can be due to excessive exposure to the sun. Years of sun damage will cause you to get wrinkles and look older than you really are. The Skin Care Foundation estimates that 90 percent of aging comes from the hours you spent in the sun." - Michael Kurzman, MD
Many people think that the only time they need to use sunscreen is while visiting the beach or being exposed to the sun for long periods of time. While this is true, we should not stop there. It's important to remember to apply sunscreen every day to prevent premature aging and skin cancer.
"Ultraviolet rays penetrate skin deep into its layers, where cells can be damaged and even killed. Sunburn is the skin’s reaction to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.You can see sunlight or feel heat, but you can’t see or feel UV radiation. Sunburn is a radiation burn to the skin. The long terms effects of sunburn won’t just leave you with wrinkles but also the risk of skin cancer. This includes melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer."
The best way to protect your skin from sun damage is by using sunscreen. Yes, you should use sunscreen especially when spending a long time in the sun but also on days when it's cloudy. Ultraviolet rays penetrate through clouds so even if we can't see them, they are still damaging our skin.
So what is the best sunscreen to use? There are two different types of sunscreen - physical and chemical sunscreen. The main difference between the two is that the physical sunscreen sits on top of the skin and does not get absorbed. Unfortunately, physical sunscreens are known for that not-so-attractive white cast as they block UV rays from entering the skin. Chemical susncreens are designed to get absorbed into the skin which block the UV rays from within.
As with everything, everyone one has their own preferences when it comes to choosing the right sunscreen. My personal choice is a physical sunscreen as chemical sunscreens can be a little irritating on sensitive skin. Find what type of sunscreen works best for your skin and use it daily!
